Which orientation to render, and why
Wulo AI renders in two orientations. Picking the right one before you generate matters more than almost any other setting — a great ad in the wrong aspect ratio gets cropped, letterboxed, or ignored by the platform's algorithm.
Vertical
- Fills the entire screen on a phone, no black bars
- Favored by short-form recommendation feeds
- Keep the subject centered — edges get cropped in some feed placements
Horizontal
- Standard for in-feed and pre-roll video
- More room for wide establishing shots and multiple subjects
- Better for content meant to be watched, not just scrolled past
Match the platform, not your favorite look
It's tempting to default to whichever orientation looks best for a given shot — but a beautiful horizontal composition uploaded to TikTok renders small, letterboxed, and easy to scroll past. Pick the platform first, then compose for it.
| Platform | Orientation | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok / Reels / Shorts | 9:16 vertical | Hooks, UGC-style ads, fast cuts |
| YouTube | 16:9 horizontal | Explainers, demos, longer-form story |
| 16:9 horizontal | In-feed ads, broader reach campaigns |
Composing for vertical
Vertical leaves very little room on either side of the subject — put the one thing you want noticed dead center, not off to one side. Text overlays and platform UI (captions, like buttons) tend to sit near the bottom third, so keep your main subject in the upper two-thirds when you can.
Composing for horizontal
Horizontal gives you room to establish a wider scene before cutting to a closer shot — useful for a product-in-context opening ("A sleek product box rotates slowly on a reflective podium...") before pushing in. Resist filling the whole frame edge to edge; a little negative space reads as more premium than a cramped composition.
Every template and generation on Wulo AI lets you pick orientation directly.
